The history of tourism in Himachal is 2000 years old but efforts to develop tourism in a proper manner were made in the second five year plan. Tourism has an important contribution in the economic development of a developing state like Himachal. Along with increasing income, tourism also provides employment opportunities. Its geographical and cultural diversity, clean, peaceful and beautiful environment, lakes, lush green forests, natural beauty, rivers and waterfalls, holy places and historical monuments attract people from the plains. The state government has given priority to the tourism industry. An autonomous organization named Himachal Pradesh Tourism Corporation has been established for the development and management of tourism in the state. The government has expanded roads, airports, railways, and communications to develop tourism. The Tourism Department is trying to promote tourism through its various activities.
Tourist complexes have been established by the Tourism Development Corporation at various famous tourist places in the state. The Tourism Department prepares tourist information booklets and participates in fairs and festivals in the state and outside the state.

* Dharamshala
